Albania Emerges as Europe’s Premier Travel Destination: Affordable, Hospitable, and Stunning

Mar 23 2023

Albania is poised to welcome an impressive wave of tourists this year, with estimates reaching up to 10 million visitors, allured by its pristine coastline spanning 450 kilometers and its breathtaking beaches.

The surge in tourism has been evident since early spring, and tour operators are anticipating a continuous influx of travelers in the coming months.

Arben Cipa, the Head of the Association of Tour Operators in Saranda, has observed a significant uptick in visitors, both in numbers and diversity, stating, “I think this year we might possibly reach even 200 percent of last year’s clientele.”

Flora Xhamani Baba, CEO of Travel Magazine Balkan, echoes this sentiment, noting a steady annual increase. She explains, “There is a progressive increase of around 20-30 percent every year. So, the number of tourists is 30 percent higher each year, and undoubtedly, this year will be even more remarkable.”

Why is Albania Gaining Popularity?

Albania’s rise as a coveted travel destination can be attributed to several factors:

1. Natural Beauty: Tourists are drawn to Albania’s unparalleled natural beauty, which includes its pristine beaches, rugged coastlines, and lush landscapes.

2. Affordability: The average cost of a full-board hotel stay in Albania ranges from €30 to €300 per day, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious travelers. Visitors find exceptional value for their money, making them more likely to return.

3. Welcoming Locals: Albanians are renowned for their warm and hospitable nature. Tourists frequently praise the friendliness and helpfulness of the local population. Visitors from various countries have expressed their admiration for Albanians, emphasizing the kindness and generosity of the people they encounter.

One Dutch tourist remarked, “We have good food here, the sun is shining, the sea is beautiful, everything is good. For us, it’s really affordable and stunning, without the crowds.”

A German tourist highlighted, “What I like most in Albania are the people. The people are really, really nice. Everywhere we go, people are stopping and asking if we need help.”

Another visitor described Albania as “beautiful, really beautiful,” and when asked if they would return, they responded enthusiastically, “I will come back many times.”

Tourism Growth: Albania witnessed 7.5 million tourists in 2022. According to the Institute of Statistics of Albania, from January to April this year, the country welcomed 3.54 million visitors, marking a remarkable 35 percent increase.

Future Outlook: The Ministry of Tourism has set an ambitious goal for 2023: to accommodate approximately 10 million tourists, solidifying Albania’s status as a premier European travel destination.
